... was a notorious slum area, immediately adjacent to Deadman's Gold.
In the foreground is a ledger from the lunatic asylum; behind are two cell doors - one from Port Arthur and one from Hobart's Campbell St Gaol.
mantraps
were manufactured with serrated jaws until the 1830s when the teeth were deleted because they were "inhumane." This mantrap is about 4ft long and the jaws (shown closed) would easily shatter any limb caught between them.
the bell
was used to regulate the chain gangs in the Port Arthur quarry.
