a huge whale's tail

...grows from the corner of the room. To either side of the whale are cases displaying scrimshaw; in the foreground is a superb table made from timbers recovered from the wreck of the Katherine Sharer.

These examples are carved into the teeth of a sperm whale. The collection includes magnificent carved bone and teeth in the shape of "ditty boxes", a lady's fan, toothpicks, etc.

the
sculpture
is
constructed

with a "spine" of plywood,

the preliminary shape made with strips of ply, glued and screwed,

covered with polystyrene which is sanded and filled,

coated with epoxy resin,

and painted.
