The Honey Farm is an attractive stop in the beautiful town of Chudleigh, in northern Tasmania.

The shop sells a wide variety of honey products: flavoured, blended honey; honey ice-cream; and honey and bee related novelties and gifts. The shop is bright, cheerful and just a bit quirky.

Part of the premises is given over to information and displays of bees and honey production. An important feature is the glass bee hive which enables visitors to see 25,000+ bees at work. Honey Farm site.

The project...

To make the display area more interesting and attractive, offer a lot of information and some interactivity.

The project split into several parts which are shown on different pages.

Wide view from counter.

The trees suround the existing poles which support the glass hive and are like thick cut-outs, artworked and sealed.

The leaves are cut from ply or equivalent, artworked and sealed, and battened to the ceiling in a couple of rows. There are additional rows of leaves and another tree trunk against the wall which are not apparent in this view.

Additional shelving can be seen below the high window at left.

The hive frame is clad, textured and artworked. Additional bees, like those overhead, are fixed, very securely, to the hive. (The bees on the ceiling - about 200 of them - lead through the shop and were made and installed by the owners)

View of display from corner window.

The informational display and shelves against the wall are based on the honeycomb structure.

The impact can be varied depending on how the hexagons are stacked, whether they are back-lit to present Bee words and graphics, or used as display shelves. The shelves vary in depth; some are open at the front and some glazed for presentation of more precious items.

The hexagons are app 810 wide x 700 high, with sides of 400 each. Depths are varied between 140, 190, 240 and 290mm.

The freestanding shelves in the foreground are an option. They are shown at about 450mm deep and viewable from both sides. There is a generous amount of room around them.

This project was designed and developed in close colaboration with the Honey Farm. Nearly all communication was via email with the design drawings being posted on my website as they were available.
