Using a newly developed automatic control system a series of dioramas were created to tell the true story of a convict's escape from the infamous Port Arthur.
The scenes fade smoothly and gradually from one to another, linked with projected images and a recorded sound-track.
I used a number of theatre-inspired special effects including a gauze which allows fades and transperency between front projections and diorama scenes behind the gauze; and an electrical flicker effect to simulate moonlight on water.
The scenes are crowded within a "stage" area a lit with purpose built lighting fittings which allow a very fine focus. The scenes include a coutroom; the convicts planning their escape; and the men in the bush as they wait for nightfall before swimming to freedom.
The presentation runs for eight minutes and forms part of a walk-through history and interpretation at the old Officers' Quarters at Eaglehawk Neck, Tasmania.
Control is via an elderly 486/100 which drives a plug-in board with 12 analog outputs and digital switches. Stereo audio is from the hard drive. There are five single slide projectors.
